Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies Addresses Driver Inquiries
As the Formula 1 paddock approaches the final race before the summer break in Hungary, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has confirmed that the team is receiving interest from multiple drivers regarding future seats. Mekies described this activity as a natural consequence of the current driver market, noting that high-performing teams typically attract inquiries from across the grid.
The focus remains on the future of Max Verstappen, whose current contract runs through 2028 but includes performance-related exit clauses. Verstappen reportedly has until October to trigger a break in his deal should he choose to pursue options elsewhere. While reports previously linked the Dutchman to McLaren, McLaren team principal Zak Brown has since reaffirmed his commitment to his current driver lineup of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Performance as the Priority
Mekies emphasized that the team’s primary objective is to bridge the remaining gap in car performance. Since the introduction of significant upgrades at the Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull has seen improved results, including podium finishes for Verstappen, despite a recent setback at Silverstone due to a rear-wing failure. Mekies noted that the team has successfully reduced a one-second deficit to the front of the field, with current efforts focused on finding the final two or three tenths of a second in pace.
Regarding the team's internal structure, Mekies dismissed concerns about recent staff departures, framing the situation as a unified effort to return to winning form. He highlighted the progress of Isack Hadjar, who has secured six consecutive top-six finishes, as a key component of the team's long-term strategy. The team aims to maintain the current driver pairing, viewing performance improvements as the most effective way to secure Verstappen’s future with the organization.
