F1 confirms contingency plans for 2026 season finale
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the 2026 season will conclude in Europe should the final two scheduled rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi be relocated. The decision follows ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has already forced the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.
While the Qatar (November 27-29) and Abu Dhabi (December 4-6) events remain on the calendar for now, F1 has set a mid-September deadline to determine if they can proceed. Domenicali noted that the sport is monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with other international series, such as the WEC, which has already opted to remain in Europe for the end of its season.
Potential venues and logistical challenges
Domenicali identified Europe as the only viable alternative for the final rounds, citing logistical complexities such as "Brexit-connected documentation" that make other global regions difficult to secure on short notice. While Italy's Imola circuit has been mentioned as a potential candidate, Domenicali clarified that no replacement venue has been finalized.
Addressing concerns regarding late-season weather in Europe, Domenicali argued that temperatures in the region during late November and early December are comparable to, or warmer than, those experienced during the Las Vegas Grand Prix. He also confirmed that a second race in Las Vegas was considered but ultimately rejected to avoid competing with the NFL schedule and to protect the event's market value.
Impact on the 2026 title race
Any further adjustments to the calendar could influence the championship standings. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli currently holds a 50-point lead over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton with 12 rounds remaining. The season is set to resume following the summer break at the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 21-23.
