Sepang to Host Postponed Bahrain Grand Prix
Formula 1 has officially confirmed that the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia will host the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix. The event, scheduled for October 2-4, serves as a replacement for the original race in the Gulf state, which was postponed earlier this season due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Despite the change in venue, the race will retain the title of the "Bahrain Grand Prix" as the Gulf state continues to provide the necessary funding. This marks the first time Malaysia has appeared on the Formula 1 calendar since 2017. The race is strategically positioned between the rounds in Baku and Singapore, forming a demanding triple-header of consecutive race weekends.
Calendar Stability and Future Outlook
While the addition of Malaysia brings the 2026 schedule to 23 races, the sport faces lingering uncertainty regarding the final two rounds of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Formula 1 officials have stated that the remainder of the schedule currently remains unchanged, though the speed of the transition to Sepang highlights the organization's readiness to pivot if further regional instability necessitates additional venue changes.
The move is subject to formal approval by the World Motor Sport Council, a step described by officials as a formality. Should further replacements be required later in the year, circuits in Imola, Portugal, and Turkey have been identified as potential alternatives.
Formula 1 will now enter a month-long summer break following the Hungarian Grand Prix. The season is set to resume with the Dutch Grand Prix, taking place from August 21-23.
