Henman Assesses Fery’s Trajectory
Following a transformative run to the Wimbledon semi-finals, British No 1 Arthur Fery is preparing for the American hard-court swing. Former British No 1 Tim Henman believes the 24-year-old’s rapid ascent—climbing from world No 185 at the start of the year to his current ranking of No 36—is only the beginning of his development.
Henman noted that while Fery’s recent performance was "amazing," there remain significant areas for technical improvement. "He's still got a lot of areas that he can improve in his game and I think that's exciting when you know you're young," Henman said. He emphasized that the margins at the top of the professional game are fine, and Fery’s new ranking now provides him the opportunity to structure his schedule around Masters 1000 events and Grand Slams.
Preparing for the US Open
Fery is set to gain direct entry into the Cincinnati Masters (August 13–23) and the Winston-Salem Open (August 23–29) as he builds toward his debut in the main draw at the US Open. While his current ranking of No 36 is fixed for the US Open entry list, Fery remains hopeful that potential withdrawals could nudge him into a seeded position, offering protection against top-tier opponents in the early rounds.
Reflecting on his sudden rise, Fery acknowledged the challenge of managing increased media attention. "It is going to be really important to handle that—the expectation from myself and also the public," Fery said. He noted that he is ready to adapt to the full-time demands of the tour, viewing the upcoming American swing as a vital opportunity to test himself against the world’s best players on a weekly basis.
Looking Ahead
The US Open begins on August 30. Fery’s performance will be a key point of interest for British tennis fans, particularly as he navigates the loss of anonymity that follows a high-profile Grand Slam breakthrough. His ability to maintain his momentum on hard courts will be the next test in what has already been a career-defining season.
