Congressional Inquiry Targets FIFA-Trump Ties
Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has initiated a formal investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The inquiry seeks to uncover the nature of the relationship between the global soccer governing body and former U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as his administration and family business.
In a letter sent Sunday, Raskin requested that FIFA provide comprehensive documentation regarding any gifts, payments, or benefits exchanged between the organization and Trump’s associates. The committee is also demanding access to visitor logs for FIFA’s office space in Trump Tower, which the organization acquired last year. Furthermore, Raskin has requested that Infantino sit for a transcribed interview by August 9.
Allegations of Political Influence
The investigation follows a series of controversies surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ held in the United States. Raskin’s letter highlights several points of concern, including:
- The "Fifa Peace Prize": The award presented to Trump at the Kennedy Center during the World Cup draw, which allegedly involved rushed renovations ordered by the administration.
- The Balogun Suspension: Reports that Trump lobbied Infantino to overturn a red-card suspension for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during the tournament. While the ban was reversed, the move drew significant international criticism.
- Ticketing Practices: The committee is examining FIFA’s dynamic pricing policies, which have already triggered separate investigations by multiple U.S. attorneys general over allegations of price-gouging.
Legal and Ethical Scrutiny
Raskin’s letter explicitly references the Department of Justice’s past dismissal of indictments against high-level FIFA officials, questioning the current leadership's commitment to ethical standards. The document suggests that Infantino has dismantled internal oversight mechanisms, creating an environment where "legal bribery" could flourish.
While the investigation is underway, Infantino has publicly dismissed the criticism. In a 15-part social media statement, the FIFA president characterized his detractors as purveyors of "hate and false narratives," maintaining that the tournament was a success.
As the U.S. looks toward hosting future events, including the 2031 Women’s World Cup and potential bids for the 2038 men’s tournament, the pressure on FIFA’s transparency remains high. Because Democrats currently hold the minority in the House, Raskin lacks the power to compel Infantino’s cooperation without Republican support.
