The Antonelli title charge moved to the brink of completion at the United States Grand Prix, where the Mercedes driver won by 13 seconds at Circuit of The Americas on a one-stop strategy. It was his ninth victory of the season, and it leaves him 123 points clear of team-mate George Russell and 124 clear of Lewis Hamilton with a maximum of 125 still on the table.
Only a top-nine finish is now required at next Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix for Antonelli to become Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion, and to do so with four rounds to spare.
Antonelli title charge reaches its final step
Antonelli arrived in Austin with an outside chance of settling the 2026 championship on Sunday, but the arithmetic demanded three things at once: a win, Hamilton outside the top four, and Russell ninth or lower. He delivered his part of the bargain with a drive his rivals could not answer.
Hamilton finished fourth and Russell eighth, so both remain mathematically in contention. The gap, however, is now structural rather than incidental. Antonelli, who turned 20 in August and is in only his second F1 season, needs a ninth place in Mexico City to remove any doubt.
Context from the weekend's earlier sessions is worth keeping: Antonelli took pole ahead of Max Verstappen, while Ferrari had topped all three practice sessions before qualifying fourth and fifth.
One stop against two at Circuit of The Americas
The race divided along strategy lines. Antonelli committed to a single stop and made it pay; the chasing group split between one and two stops, and the tyre offset shaped the order behind him rather than the fight at the front.
Charles Leclerc finished second for Ferrari, winning out against Verstappen in the battle between the two-stop runners. Hamilton came home fourth, roughly a second behind Verstappen, with Lando Norris fifth on a one-stop strategy ahead of Red Bull's Isack Hadjar in sixth.
George Russell's penalty and a lost afternoon
Russell started sixth and finished eighth, a result that summarised a difficult Austin weekend. He was judged to have gained an advantage by going off track in his first-lap battle with Oscar Piastri and served a five-second penalty at his sole pit stop.
The elongated stop dropped him behind the McLarens. He then followed Piastri closely for almost half the race without finding a way past, and the points gap to his team-mate widened accordingly.
Liam Lawson continued his run of points finishes with ninth for Racing Bulls, while Pierre Gasly took the final point in tenth for Alpine.
Mexico City next and what the margin means
The championship moves to the Mexico City Grand Prix from October 30 to November 1, the second leg of the current triple header. Antonelli does not need to win there; ninth would be enough, and every position above it simply adds margin.
For Russell and Hamilton, the mathematics now require Antonelli to fail to score in Mexico and beyond. Neither has control of the outcome, which is the practical consequence of a 13-second defeat on a circuit where the field was expected to be tighter.
