A Future in Coaching
Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has publicly confirmed his desire to transition into coaching following his retirement from international cricket. Speaking on the For The Love of Cricket podcast, the 35-year-old stated that he intends to remain within the sport in a leadership capacity, explicitly noting that he would “absolutely” love to coach the England side in the future.
Stokes, who retired from international duty following England’s 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand in June, emphasized that his decision to step away from playing is final. He noted that his commitment to the game was tied to his role as captain, stating, “If I’m going to play for England, it’s going to be as captain.”
Reflections on the McCullum and Root Transitions
Addressing the recent structural changes in the England Test setup, Stokes suggested that the departure of head coach Brendon McCullum from the Test role might not have occurred had he not announced his own retirement first. “If I hadn’t made the decision that I made four weeks ago, Baz would still be coach,” Stokes remarked.
Regarding the reappointment of Joe Root as Test captain, Stokes expressed support for his long-time teammate but admitted to personal concern regarding the toll the position takes on the batter. “I told Joe: ‘my only worry is you’,” Stokes said, referencing the pressure Root faced during his previous tenure. “I don’t want to see that ever happen again because I care for Joe a lot.”
Questions Over Leadership Succession
Stokes also addressed the decision to overlook vice-captain Harry Brook for the Test captaincy. While acknowledging the reasoning provided by managing director Rob Key—who suggested it was not the right time for the 27-year-old—Stokes questioned the message sent to the player. “If you think someone is going to be a good captain or a good leader, just give it to them,” he argued, drawing on his own experience of taking the role without prior captaincy leadership.
England’s Test team, now under the guidance of new head coach Stephen Fleming and captain Joe Root, prepares for their upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19.
