European commitments force schedule changes
All five Scottish clubs currently competing in European tournaments have exercised their right to postpone their Scottish Premiership matches scheduled for Saturday, 22 August. The decision follows the implementation of a rule change in April 2025, which allows teams involved in European competition to unilaterally delay domestic league fixtures.
Impacted fixtures
The following matches have been affected by the scheduling conflict:
- Falkirk vs Heart of Midlothian: Postponed as Hearts are guaranteed a place in at least the Conference League play-offs.
- Rangers vs St Mirren: Postponed as Rangers are confirmed for either Europa League or Conference League play-offs.
- St Johnstone vs Celtic: Postponed as Celtic are involved in the Champions League play-offs.
Additionally, the matches Hibernian vs Kilmarnock and Motherwell vs Aberdeen remain subject to postponement depending on whether Hibernian and Motherwell successfully reach the Conference League play-offs. The only match in the third round of the Premiership currently confirmed to proceed as scheduled is Dundee United vs Dundee.
Context of European campaigns
The qualifying play-offs for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League are set to take place across two legs, flanking the weekend of 22 August. Rearranged league fixtures are expected to be played in midweek slots on either 8/9 or 15/16 September.
Current status of the clubs:
- Celtic: Awaiting their Champions League play-off opponents.
- Heart of Midlothian: Trailing 4-0 on aggregate in their Champions League second-round qualifier against Sturm Graz; expected to drop into Europa League qualifying.
- Rangers: Drawn against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok for the third round of Europa League qualifying.
- Motherwell: Leading 2-0 on aggregate against Faroese side HB in the Conference League second round.
- Hibernian: Trailing 2-0 on aggregate to Kosovan side Malisheva in the Conference League second round.
