Immediate Return to Competition
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to resume his professional career with immediate effect following the resolution of his doping suspension. The 25-year-old had been sidelined since November 2024 after testing positive for a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited substance.
Resolution of the Appeal
Mudryk’s return follows a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The Football Association (FA) confirmed that changes to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) procedures mean that, under current technical reporting standards, the concentration found in Mudryk’s sample would not have been flagged as a violation today. While Mudryk accepted that an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) occurred, the FA and WADA agreed that his period of ineligibility is considered served as of the date of the agreement.
Context and Reintegration
Mudryk, who joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88m in January 2023, has maintained his innocence throughout the process, attributing the positive test to contamination during international duty with Ukraine in late 2024. During his two-year absence, the winger was barred from Chelsea’s Cobham training facilities and reportedly spent time working in a London charity shop while maintaining his fitness with personal trainers.
Chelsea released a statement welcoming the resolution, noting that the scientific updates to testing reliability provide the necessary context to move forward. The club has committed to supporting his reintegration into the squad.
What Comes Next
It remains uncertain whether Mudryk will immediately feature in manager Xabi Alonso’s first-team plans. Given his two-year competitive hiatus, the club is currently evaluating whether a loan move is required to help the player regain full match fitness before returning to Premier League action.
