A Commemorative Tribute at the Metro Bank One Day Cup
Gloucestershire will honor the late Syd Lawrence this Sunday during their Metro Bank One Day Cup fixture against Nottinghamshire. The club will wear a special commemorative kit to celebrate the life of the former England fast bowler and raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
Lawrence, who passed away in June 2025 at the age of 61, was a pioneering figure in English cricket. In 1988, he became the first British-born Black cricketer to play Test cricket for England, later serving as Gloucestershire’s first Black president. His influence on the club remains a focal point for current players, including James Bracey.
Reflecting on a Lasting Legacy
For Bracey, the tribute serves as a reminder of Lawrence’s final major appearance with the team. In September 2024, Lawrence presented the trophy to the Gloucestershire squad after they secured their first-ever T20 Blast title. Bracey described the moment as deeply emotional, noting that seeing Lawrence’s reaction to the team's success highlighted his enduring commitment to the club.
"To see his face when he was able to hold that trophy was really special for me," Bracey said. "He was larger than life and had a hell of a lot of energy."
Raising Awareness for MNDA
Beyond the celebration of his cricketing career, the event aims to bring attention to the challenges faced by those living with motor neurone disease. Bracey emphasized the importance of the MNDA’s work, noting that the organization provides critical support not only to patients but to their families and friends as well.
As the club prepares for Sunday’s match, the focus remains on honoring Lawrence as both a trailblazer for future generations and a dedicated member of the Gloucestershire community.
